What is a money plant?

One name, many beautiful plants

In India, "money plant" is a beloved term that covers several fast-growing, trailing vine species — most commonly golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum), but also satin pothos, N'Joy, oxycardium, scindapsus varieties, marble queen, and rare collector forms. What they all share: ease of care, lush green foliage, and deep cultural significance as symbols of good fortune.

Per Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui traditions, money plants are among the most auspicious plants you can keep at home or in your office — believed to attract prosperity, purify air, and radiate positive energy.

🌿 Quick fact: NASA's 1989 Clean Air Study found pothos-type plants absorb harmful VOCs including formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene in controlled environments. View NASA NTRS study →  Our benefits guide →

Where to place your money plant

Placement matters as much as care. Read our complete Vastu guide →

South-East ✓ Best
Living room

The wealth corner in Vastu. Place here to attract financial growth and prosperity for the household.

North ✓ Recommended
Home office / study

Associated with career opportunities and new beginnings. Ideal near your workspace.

East ✓ Good
Near windows

Morning light from the east is gentle and ideal for money plants while supporting positive energy flow.

Any direction
Office desk

A small money plant on your desk is believed to reduce stress and attract professional opportunities.

⚠️

Avoid the south direction — In Vastu, south is associated with obstacles. Also avoid dark corners with no natural light — a weakened plant loses its positive energy.

Even the most forgiving plant has bad days. Read our complete problems guide →

Yellow leaves
Overwatering or insufficient light

Let soil dry between waterings. Move to a brighter spot. Check roots for root rot.

Full problems guide
Root rot
Soggy, dark roots with a musty smell

Remove affected roots with sterilised scissors, repot in fresh well-draining mix, reduce watering frequency.

Leggy stems
Long vines with sparse, small leaves

Increase light levels and pinch growing tips regularly.

How to make money plant bushy
Losing variegation
Leaves reverting to solid green

Variegated varieties need more light to maintain patterns. Move closer to a bright window — avoid direct sun.
